If you’ve recently upgraded to Windows 10 and now your keyboard isn’t working, you’re not alone. Many other Windows 10 users are reporting the same problem. And fortunately, there’s a solution.

Here are 4 options to try. You may not need to try them all.

How to Use a Keyboard to Click Instead of a Mouse. This wikiHow teaches you how to use a keyboard to move the mouse around the screen and click on things if your.

Just work your way down the list until you find the one that fixes the problem. Method 1: Check your USB port is working Sometimes a USB port can just stop working when you upgrade to a new version of Windows. Usually it’s because of a driver problem. You should always check for this problem first. Fortunately it’s easy to test: simply unplug the keyboard from the USB port and plug in another USB device – like a mouse or an external hard-drive. If that device doesn’t work either, the USB port itself is the problem, and you should skip straight to. If the device you just plugged in does work, then continue to.

Method 2: Adjust your keyboard settings Windows has a setting, called Filter Keys, that allows you to control how it deals with accidental repeated keystrokes. Unfortunately, if turned on, this setting has been known to cause some keyboards to stop working in Windows 10. So you should check if it’s turned on. If it is, you should turn it off and see if that resolves the problem. 1) On your keyboard, press the Windows key and I at the same time to open the Setting window. 2) Click Ease of Access. 3) Click Keyboard.

4) Ensure Filter Keys is OFF, and close the window. Method 3: Reinstall your keyboard driver If your keyboard driver has developed a fault, your keyboard may stop working. To fix it:1) Right-click the Start button, then click Device Manager. 2) Expand Keyboards then right-click Standard PS/2 Keyboard and click Uninstall. 3) When prompted to confirm, click OK. 4) Restart your computer after the uninstall. If the problem persists, it’s likely that your driver is outdated, rather than faulty, and you should try below.

Method 4: Update your keyboard and USB driver (recommended) One of the most common causes of an unresponsive keyboard is an outdated keyboard or USB driver. There are two ways you can get the right drivers for your keyboard and USB port: manually or automatically. Manual driver update – You can update your drivers manually by going to the manufacturer’s website and searching for the most recent correct driver.

Note that for your USB driver, you may need to try both the manufacturer of your PC and also the manufacturer of your USB port’s chip set. If you don’t have the time, patience or computer skills to update your drivers manually, you can, instead, do it automatically with.

Automatic driver update – Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for both your mouse and your USB port. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running or who all the manufacturers are, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing. You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee): 1) and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers. 3) Click the Update button next to the flagged keyboard (or USB device) to automatically download and install the correct version of it (you can do this with the FREE version).

Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All). Well, the problem is strange indeed. If I turn Numlock off, my keyboard works fine, but I can’t use the numpad on the right of my keyboard. If I turn Numlock on, the keys under 7, 8 and 9 turn in a second numpad, and the real one works just fine.

This feels like Windows mistake my external keyboard with a laptop built-in. What is weirder even, is that this problem occurs on system start, and is temporarily solved by unplugging/replugging the keyboard. The keyboard is then recognised as should be and works as intended until the next boot (even going to sleep and restarting brings the error back). I am looking for a more permanent solution, not a fix. Hi Lia, So sorry about what happened. Do you mean that your keyboard only doesn’t work when you are using Windows apps?

If so, here are something you may want to try: 1. Disable or put an end to your Cortana. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and S at the same time. Type cmd.exe in. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator. Click Yes to continue.

In the window that pops up, type “sc stop WSearch” (no quotation mark) and hit Enter on your keybaord, then type “sc start WSearch” (no quotation mark) and hit Enter. Press Win + R to open Run command. Copy and paste “C:Windowssystem32ctfmon.exe” (without the quotation mark). Feel free to let us know if these solutions help you fix the problem. Hi Melissa, Would you please share with us if the E and R key are the only two keys that are at fault? How about your other keys, are they working alright?

If your other keys are also suffering from similar problems, i.e. Showing numbers when you type certain letters, and you are using a laptop, you can turn the NumLock off on your keyboard. In some case, you may need to press the Fn key on your keyboard and NumLock key at the same time to turn it off. If you need more help, feel free to let us know what laptop or desktop you are using and we’d be glad to provide more detailed assistance. Hi Melissa, Thanks for your reply. The for keys changed to number could be what we called the NumLock issue. If it happens again, you can do as instructed in my last reply to get it straight.

As for the not working keys issue, would you please try to use a different keyboard to see if the problem continues? You can try to use a USB keyboard or a Bluetooth one, whichever keyboard you have at hand. If the problem is the same with a second or even a third keyboard, then you might need to consult HP technical support for further help. If the problem only exists on your laptop keyboard, the problem could be that your keyboard hardware is faulty. Look forward to your test result. Hi Icator, so sorry for what happened. From your description, you were using Windows 10 OS, am I correct?

If so, you can try to turn your notebook on and off three times in a row, and it will lead you into the Advanced options screen. If you need more help, the Method 1 in this post: should help. When you are able to go the the Advanced options page, you should be able to see System Restore option or Go back to the previous build option, choose one as you pleased. Then the restore process should be starting. Hope this is helping you.

If you need more help, feel free to ask. Would you please tell me if you are able to use your mouse?

Or if you are using a laptop, is your touchpad or pen working? If so, then you are totally capable of doing the procedures as mentioned in the post. Use you keyboard to click the following buttons: Go to Start, then select Settings Ease of Access Keyboard.

Then turn on your on-screen keyboard. Use your mouse to click the keys you want. If you want to download Driver Easy, just hit this link here: Then use your mouse to continue with the installation. Hope this helps.

Feel free to let us know what more that we can do. For anyone with the issue of Windows 10 disabling your keyboard, it’s a simple fix but, for the tech savvy. You have to open the computer case and remove the battery from the mobo.

Leave it out for about 1 minute, then reinstall. This will reset the mobo to factory settings and your keyboard, USB/ps2 will work again. Afterwards, I would recommend a driver program to update drivers, something on the lines of Driver Detective Professional. Lastly, even though this was not the initial problem asked about, the other constant pending issue for Win10 is multiple displays not operating/ identifying. This problem can be resolved by removing any other added video cards from the computer and installing the drivers for the 1st video adapter, then proceed to 2nd thereafter.

Make sure to create a bootable backup of PC on an external drive or flash. This can easily resolve issues with incompatible drivers within Win10. Hope this helps, cheers.

You mentioned that neither your keyboard, your mouse or your touchpad is working. If you are sure that your hardware are working properly, then the problem could be misfit drivers.

Could you please try connect your laptop to an external keyboard to see if you can get through the password page? If you currently do not have another keyboard at hand, it is suggested that you perform a hard reboot on your laptop. Turn off your laptop.

Remove all port replicator or docking station. Disconnect all external devices such as USB storage devices, mouse, printers, external displays. Then unplug the AC adapter from the laptop.

Remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds or more. Insert the battery again, then plug the AC adapter back in. Turn on your Laptop. When you see Windows open, reconnect each peripheral one by one.
